An International Network for Global Conservation and Climate Action
GAIAS Europa collaborates with several international networks dedicated to protecting the planet’s most valuable ecosystems. With projects in the Galápagos Islands and the Amazon, we work alongside global partners to combat climate change, conserve wildlife, and foster sustainable solutions with a worldwide impact.
Our mission is built on the connection between science, action, and collaboration—integrating local knowledge with international expertise and resources to create a more balanced and resilient future.
What We Do
Our work is organized around four strategic pillars, driven by our global network of allies:
Wildlife Conservation
- Protecting Unique Species: We lead projects to preserve biodiversity in critical ecosystems like the Galápagos and the Amazon, working with both local and international researchers.
- Restoring Essential Habitats: We collaborate with governments, NGOs, and communities to restore key ecosystems, ensuring healthy environments for wildlife.
- Addressing Global Threats: We work to mitigate risks stemming from ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss by mobilizing international experts and resources.
Climate Change Prevention Research
- Global Science for Local Solutions: Alongside international universities and research centers, we study the impact of climate change on biodiversity and design effective mitigation strategies.
- Shared Data Network: We create platforms that facilitate knowledge exchange among researchers worldwide, accelerating the generation of innovative solutions.
International Partnership Network
- Global Collaboration: We work with strategic partners—including universities, NGOs, and international agencies—to maximize the impact of our projects.
- Empowering Local Communities: We involve the inhabitants of the Galápagos and the Amazon in conservation initiatives, integrating them into our global network as agents of change.
- Connecting with International Organizations: We provide scientific data and advisory services to influence public policy and global conservation programs.
Global Education and Awareness
- International Training: We organize workshops, exchanges, and educational projects for students, scientists, and community leaders from around the world.
- Scientific Communication: We publish and share findings with our global network to inspire new actions and innovative solutions.
- Global Advocacy: We promote international campaigns that highlight the importance of protecting essential ecosystems like the Galápagos and the Amazon.
From Valencia to the World’s Most Iconic Ecosystems
At GAIAS Europa, we are committed to biodiversity conservation and the fight against climate change through science, innovation, and international collaboration.
As part of this effort, we operate two strategic research stations located in two of the most important and fragile ecosystems on the planet: the Galápagos Islands and the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Galapagos Science Center
Science for Global Conservation
The Galapagos Science Center (GSC) is a research facility located on San Cristóbal Island, in the heart of the Galápagos. Founded through a partnership between the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill (UNC) and Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), the GSC combines academic excellence, cutting-edge technology, and a strategic location to address the most pressing
environmental challenges of the 21st century.
The GSC leads research in key areas such as biodiversity, ecosystem health, marine and terrestrial ecology, and climate change impacts. Its mission is to generate scientific knowledge that not only
contributes to the conservation of the Galápagos but also inspires sustainable solutions for other fragile ecosystems worldwide.
The GSC focuses its efforts on three fundamental pillars:
Interdisciplinary Scientific Research:
The GSC develops projects across five main areas: environmental change, community and human health, conservation, oceans, and biodiversity.
Experiential Education:
The center offers educational programs that integrate students and scientists into hands-on research. Through alliances with the Galápagos National Park, we facilitate direct field training.
Community Development Program:
The GSC collaborates with the local community to foster sustainable development and increase environmental stewardship, improving the interaction between people and their environment.
Tiputini Biodiversity Station:
Conservation in the Heart of the Amazon
The Tiputini Biodiversity Station (TBS) is a premier research and conservation center located within the Yasuní National Park, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Managed by Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), TBS serves as a living laboratory that houses unparalleled biological wealth. It offers a unique space for the study of biodiversity, ecology, and the complex interactions between human communities and their natural environment.
TBS is more than just a research hub; it is a space for learning, conservation, and action. Since its inception, the station has focused on protecting the Ecuadorian Amazon through initiatives that blend
science, education, and sustainability.
Scientific Research in a Unique Natural Laboratory
Tiputini is an epicenter for scientists and students seeking to uncover the secrets of the tropical rainforest.
- Discovery of new species and in-depth studies on ecological interactions.
- Projects that measure human impact and provide actionable conservation solutions.
- Collaboration with international universities and institutions to foster global knowledge exchange.
Amazonian Biodiversity Conservation
TBS’s commitment to protecting the Amazon includes:
- Continuous monitoring of flora and fauna.
- Implementation of sustainable practices within the station’s operations.
- Strengthening alliances with local communities and government agencies for sustainable
resource management.
Environmental Education and Academic Training
TBS serves as an outdoor classroom that inspires students and visitors to reconnect with nature:
- Academic programs and hands-on field courses for universities worldwide.
- Educational workshops and guided visits for schools to promote environmental stewardship.
- Training activities for local communities, integrating ancestral knowledge with modern practices.
Community and Sustainable Development
The station works closely with Amazonian communities to promote sustainable economic alternatives:
- Community-based ecotourism, generating income while preserving the environment.
- Promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and cultural heritage conservation.
Global Outreach and Awareness
Through strategic alliances, publications, and digital media, TBS shares the message of Amazonian conservation with the world. Its mission is to inspire local and global actions to protect this vital
ecosystem for future generations.
Local Actions with Global Impact
Our scientific stations in the Galápagos and the Amazon are not just research centers; they are platforms where science, conservation, and collaboration meet to drive real change.
At GAIAS Europa, we work to ensure that these vital ecosystems—which hold unmatched biodiversity and play a key role in the planet’s balance—remain protected for generations to come.
Our Global Reach
From our HUB in Valencia, we coordinate a network that spans Latin America, Europe, and beyond, joining forces to address the world’s most urgent challenges. In the Galápagos, our initiatives protect iconic species and ecosystem stability. In the Amazon, we work to restore and safeguard one of the most critical environments for the health of our planet and its people.
