Climate

With an average annual temperature of 18°C–20°C, Valencia enjoys mild winters, warm summers, and an average of 300 sunny days per year. In early June, daytime temperatures typically range from 24°C–28°C, dropping to 16°C–20°C at night, with a very low chance of rain. You can check the current local forecast here.

Language

Valencia has two official languages: Spanish (Castellano) and Valencian. You will often see street signs and building names in both. While many locals may not speak multiple European languages, English is increasingly popular, especially among young people. In airports, major hotels, and tourist areas, you will easily find staff who speak English (as well as French or Italian).

Business Hours

Traditional neighborhood shops generally open Monday - Saturday, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM and, after a long lunch break, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. However, department stores, malls, and larger shops in commercial districts stay open all day from 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM.

Public Transportation

Valencia has an extensive public transit network, including several metro lines and numerous bus routes. In addition to single-trip tickets—which can be purchased at metro stations, vending machines at tram stops, or directly on buses—there are multi-trip, 1-day, and multi-day passes available. Dining Out

Spanish meal times are quite late. Lunch is typically served between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM, while dinner is usually between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Standard restaurant hours are 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM for lunch and 8:30 PM - 11:30 PM for dinner. However, restaurants in tourist areas, informal bars, and fast-food chains often have much broader schedules.

Banking and Currency

Banks are generally open Monday - Friday, from 8:30 AM - 2:00 PM. Some branches may open one or two afternoons per week. 24-hour ATMs are widely available at banks, malls, and department stores. The official currency is the Euro (€).

Electricity

Spain uses 220V - 50Hz AC with standard European-style plugs and outlets (Type C and F). Note: You may need a power adapter and/or a voltage converter for U.S. appliances.

Cost of Living

Valencia is a very affordable city. The cost of living is approximately 30% lower than in Madrid or Barcelona.

Student Residences: Prices range from €750 to €1,500 per month. This is our top recommendation for first-year students, as it allows you to meet peers from around the world, participate in social activities, access on-site gyms, and enjoy healthy meal plans while building lifelong friendships.

Shared Apartments: Monthly rent for a room usually ranges from €300 to €450, plus utilities.

Dining and Groceries: A "fixed-price" lunch menu (menú del día) at a restaurant costs between €8 and €10. Monthly grocery bills typically range from €250 to €350 per person.
Health Insurance: Private insurance costs between €50 and €80 per month, depending on coverage.

Leisure and Recreation: Costs vary by lifestyle. Movie tickets average €8, monthly gym or wellness memberships are between €20 and €40, and museum admission is approximately €6. living is approximately 30% lower than in Madrid or Barcelona.
