At GAIAS Europa, we would like to join in a celebration that is close to our hearts. The Galapagos Science Centre, a joint initiative of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is marking 15 years of uninterrupted work in research, experiential education and community development in one of the planet’s most unique and fragile ecosystems.
What began in 2010 as an agreement between two universities has, year after year, become a benchmark for scientific research in the Galápagos. The centre has built its work around the One Health approach, a vision that views human health, animal health and environmental balance as parts of a single, interdependent system. Within this framework, the GSC has promoted programmes ranging from monitoring water quality and local public health to marine research and the conservation of the archipelago’s iconic species.
The figures bear this journey out. More than 190 research projects across five areas (climate change, community and human health, conservation, oceans and biodiversity), more than 1,600 national and international scientists, 850 students trained on undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes, and more than 440 scientific publications. Added to this are long-term initiatives such as the Biobank, which preserves the genetic resources of Ecuador’s biodiversity, and the Galapagos Data Hub, launched in 2024 to make geographical, biological and socio-economic data on the archipelago available to the public. More than 10,500 people from the local community have benefited directly from its community development projects.
As part of the USFQ family, we at GAIAS Europa also feel that this anniversary is our own. From our base in Valencia, we work every day to build bridges between the university and the European scientific and educational ecosystem, and this commitment to institutional collaboration is reflected in the partnerships we maintain with organisations such as the CEU and the Oceanogràfic. We share with both a firm commitment to marine biodiversity, applied research and environmental awareness – values that have also underpinned the Galapagos Science Centre since its foundation.
These 15 years of the GSC demonstrate that conservation in the Galápagos is progressing thanks to long-standing partnerships, not isolated efforts. At GAIAS Europa, we remain committed to this same model, linking Ecuador’s research and environmental commitment with institutions and projects such as those we promote from Valencia.
